AM

By the time AM dropped in 2013, Arctic Monkeys were already indie royalty, but this record catapulted them into a completely different stratosphere. It’s the sound of a band fully embracing their “rock star” era, leaning into a midnight aesthetic that felt worlds away from the frantic Sheffield pubs of their debut. It’s stylish, confident, and incredibly well-realised – the kind of album that defines a specific moment in time.

Musically, it’s a brilliant cocktail of heavy, stoner-rock riffs mixed with a smooth R&B groove. Alex Turner’s lyrics became more cinematic and late-night, traded in for a croon that fits the thick, bass-heavy production. It’s got this swaggering, “leather jacket” vibe that makes it feel like it was designed specifically to be played in a dimly lit bar or on a night drive. The drums are loud and crisp, providing a foundation that makes every track feel massive.

“Do i wanna know?” is the standout that basically became the anthem of the decade, with a riff that is impossible to shake. “R u mine?” brings that frenetic energy back but with a much heavier weight, while “Arabella” shows off that perfect blend of 70s rock and modern hip-hop influence. These aren’t just songs; they’re moods that stay with you long after the needle drops.

AM is still fun to listen to because it’s a masterclass in how to reorganise a band’s identity without losing what made them great. It’s slick but never feels fake. It’s an album that knows exactly how cool it is, and that confidence is infectious. Whether you’re a die-hard indie fan or just someone who appreciates a great hook, it’s a record that delivers on every front.
