Cansei de Ser Sexy
When CSS burst out of São Paulo in the mid-2000s, they brought a massive, neon-coloured explosion of fun to the indie-dance scene. Their 2005 self-titled debut (released internationally in 2006) was the perfect antidote to the more serious, leather-jacket-wearing rock bands of the time. It was unpretentious, slightly chaotic, and completely obsessed with pop culture. They were the ultimate “party” band, making music that sounded like it was being made by a group of friends who just wanted to dance and have a laugh.
The sound is a messy, brilliant blend of electro-punk, lo-fi indie, and disco. It’s full of distorted synths, simple but infectious drum machine beats, and Lovefoxxx’s deadpan, often hilarious vocals. There’s a DIY roughness to it that makes it feel very accessible and fresh. It’s not trying to be perfect – it’s trying to be exciting. The influences are all over the place, from early 80s New Wave to contemporary club music, all filtered through a playful, irreverent lens.
“Music is my hot hot sex” became a huge hit for a reason – it’s incredibly catchy and perfectly captures their vibe. “Let’s make love and listen to Death from Above” is another standout that basically defined the “indie-disco” era. This album is still a blast to revisit because its energy is so infectious. It’s a reminder that music doesn’t always have to be profound – sometimes it just needs to be a bit silly and make you want to jump around your living room.
