Is this it

When Is This It came out in 2001, The Strokes instantly went from buzzy New York band to defining-the-moment status. This was their debut, and it landed with a confidence that felt almost shocking at the time. It showed up right when rock music was ready for a reset, and suddenly everyone was talking about tight songs, skinny ties, and that effortless downtown cool.

The sound is stripped back, punchy, and full of attitude. The guitars are raw but melodic, the drums feel loose without falling apart, and Julian Casablancas’ vocals sit somewhere between bored, sincere, and completely locked in. You can hear clear influences from late-70s punk and new wave, especially bands like Television and the Velvet Underground, but it never feels like a history lesson. The whole album has a sweaty, late-night energy – short songs, sharp hooks, and no wasted motion.

A handful of tracks still hit immediately. Last Nite is an all-timer, Someday balances nostalgia and urgency perfectly, and Hard to Explain captures that restless, wired feeling better than most debut singles ever could. Even deeper cuts like Barely Legal feel essential.

What keeps Is This It worth revisiting is how alive it still sounds. It’s fun, fast, and endlessly replayable. No filler, no overthinking – just great songs that still feel cool every time you press play.
