Songs from the Big Chair
When Tears for Fears released Songs from the Big Chair in February 1985, they weren't just stepping out of the shadows of their synth-pop debut - they were completely shattering expectations. Their first record, The Hurting, was a brilliant but starkly minimalist look at childhood trauma, wrapped in cold electronic beats. With this second album, Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith decided to scale things up massively, transitioning from moody bedroom synth-pop into a massive, world-conquering arena sound that completely defined mid-eighties pop rock.
Musically, the record is an absolute masterclass in widescreen pop production. It retains those rich, layered synthesizers that the era is famous for, but injects a powerful dose of live instrumentation - heavy drums, soaring guitar solos, and even a bit of soulful saxophone. It is a wonderfully cinematic experience that feels incredibly polished without losing its emotional weight. Instead of sounding dated, the clever arrangements and diverse textures give the entire album an incredibly sophisticated, timeless atmosphere that bridges the gap between commercial pop and progressive art rock.
The album relies on a brilliant sequencing strategy, anchoring its artsy experimentation with colossal radio anthems. You get huge, confrontational tracks like Shout, alongside the breezy, driving rhythm of Everybody wants to rule the world - a song that manages to feel completely effortless while still hiding some politically sharp lyrics beneath its sunny exterior. Then there is the beautifully melodic Head over heels, which perfectly showcases the band's knack for building a track to a gorgeous, emotional peak. It is this balance of massive hooks and deep musical curiosity that gives the record such phenomenal replay value, making it a joy to return to decades down the line.
