The Dark Side of the Moon

Released back in 1973, this is the record that propelled Pink Floyd into a completely different stratosphere. By this point, they’d moved away from their earlier psychedelic experiments and were refining a much more cinematic and cohesive sound. It’s widely considered one of the greatest albums of all time, but beyond the massive reputation, it’s simply a stunning piece of art that redefined what a studio recording could be.

The sound is incredibly lush and immersive – it’s the ultimate “headphone album”. It’s packed with pioneering tape loops, synthesiser textures, and soulful backing vocals that create a thick, atmospheric wall of sound. There’s a sense of space and pacing here that is rarely matched – it moves through different moods effortlessly, from the frantic energy of “On the run” to the majestic, slow-burning blues of “Us and them”. It’s an exploration of the human experience that feels remarkably grounded despite its grand scale.

Songs like “Money” and “Time” are obviously the big hitters, but the album really works best when you listen to it as one continuous journey. The way the heartbeats at the beginning and end bookend the whole experience is a brilliant touch. It’s full of little surprises – like the soaring vocal solo on “The great gig in the sky” – that still have the power to give you goosebumps even after dozens of listens.

Why is it still worth your time? Because it’s a masterclass in production and atmosphere. It doesn’t feel like a relic of the seventies – it feels timeless. There’s a reason people still use this to test out high-end speakers; the sheer detail in the mix is staggering. It’s an essential part of any music lover’s collection, offering a perfect blend of experimentalism and accessible, soaring melodies.
