Wonderland was released on 2 June 1986 in the UK and marked the debut album from Erasure. It introduced the partnership between Vince Clarke, already well known from Depeche Mode and Yazoo, and Andy Bell, whose soaring vocals proved to be the perfect match for Clarke's melodic synth work. Although it wasn't an instant commercial breakthrough, it's fascinating to hear the foundations of a duo that would soon become one of the defining names in British synth-pop.

The album has that unmistakable mid 80s electronic sound, packed with bright synthesisers, crisp drum machines and irresistibly catchy hooks. At the same time, there's a slightly moodier edge running through many of the songs, giving Wonderland more depth than you might expect from a debut. It feels energetic without being overwhelming, balancing dancefloor-friendly moments with heartfelt melodies that still sound fresh. There's plenty of charm here, and you can hear the confidence between Bell and Clarke growing with every track.

Standout moments include the infectious 'Oh L'amour', the driving 'Who Needs Love Like That' and the uplifting 'Heavenly Action', all of which hinted at just how strong Erasure's songwriting would become. Tracks like 'Reunion' and 'My Heart... So Blue' are equally rewarding, adding a little more emotion to the mix without slowing the pace. Wonderland remains a really enjoyable listen because it captures a band finding its identity while already sounding remarkably assured. It may not have the polished pop perfection of the albums that followed, but that's part of its appeal. It's full of great melodies, genuine personality and enough replay value to keep you coming back long after the final synth fades away.
